The operation involves the extraction of large segments of a patient's stomach and intestine.

The two basic approaches involved are:

  • Malabsorptive procedures that alter digestion, thus causing the food to be poorly digested and incompletely absorbed so that it is eliminated in the stool
  • Restrictive procedures that decrease food intake

    Malabsorptive procedures:

Since the restrictive procedure didn't attain proper result, and the patients were disappointed with the result often attain, thus the procedure that alters digestion called the Malabsorptive procedure came into being. It worked along with the restrictive procedure. It limits the absorption of calories because there is a technique which involves the bypass of the small intestine.

    Restrictive procedure:

Restrictive weight loss surgery involves reducing the amount of food consumed at one time. It does not interfere with the normal digestion of food. In this procedure the surgeon creates a smaller upper stomach pouch. The pouch, with a capacity of approximately 1/2 to 1 oz. (15 to 30 ml), connects to the rest of the stomach through an outlet known as a "stoma."

The patient has to adhere to specific norms and conditions to be followed that are essential for a proper and safe recovery. It's important for the patient to follow the guidelines issued by the surgeon. Those who learn to eat slowly, eat less, and avoid drinking too many fluids, particularly carbonated beverages are the Patients who see the best results from a restrictive weight loss procedure.

The stomach pouch can stretch if the patient does not follow the specific guidelines, thus defeating the purpose of the surgery.
