As the father of four, I share their worry. This is a complex topic, involving socioeconomic, political, behavioral and religious aspects of life. In this article, I will share concepts about violence and teenagers for you to consider as you raise your teens in a hostile world.

Much data has been collected in the twentieth century to indicate that violence affects many of our teenagers. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified violence as one of the “deadly rites of passage” for teens as they travel from childhood to adulthood. Violence can take many forms: the nonphysical (verbal harassment, verbal intimidation, blocking one’s access to escape) and the physical (hitting, choking, biting, sexual abuse, use of a weapon, murder, suicide). It may involve teenagers as victims or perpetrators as well as their families, peers, school officials, strangers, or others. It may be part of dating violence or gang violence. The most at risk are homeless teens, particularly those from minority backgrounds.
