Appetite suppressant medications are of immense
help in the weight loss process. It plays a key role in weight
loss by diminishing appetite or increasing the feeling of
being full. These medications fall into 2 broad pharmacological
categories. Some of these act via brain catecholamine pathways
whereas the others act via serotonin pathways. These drugs
are reserved for those who are clinically at risk from being
overweight.
The current licensing regulations only allow
their use over a relatively short period (12 to 16 weeks)
but clinical trials have shown them to be effective over longer
periods, particularly in preventing weight regain. Appetite
suppressant medications are used with a course of behavioral
treatment and dietary counseling, designed to help you make
long-term changes in your diet and physical activity. When
used appropriately, appetite suppressants can be of real therapeutic
benefit, and pose little risk to our health.
