Most of the people think that they
are more active and walk further than they actually
do if they are wearing pedometer. Used originally by
sports and physical fitness people, pedometers are now
becoming fast popular as an everyman exercise measurer
and motivator. Pedometers are actually a way through
which you analyze how active you are in your daily life.
We basically spent a lot of time by sitting behind desk,
in front of computer etc. In a fast-paced and hectic
life, you wonder how many kilometers/miles you have
walked today.
Pedometer is basically a great motivational
tool that assists you how active you are and help you
to spur on to get a few steps. It basically clips into
your belt and also can be attached with top of your
pant/skirts. Some pedometers also tell you about your
calorie intake and distance traveled; this can be calculated
on the basis of your step size and then feed this into
the pedometer to calculate the more accurate result.
You can use it by two different ways:
Firstly, it can be used to measure your daily incidental
activities by counting steps. Incidental activity is
basically an activity or a natural movement that you
do throughout a day. All your daily activities actually
increase your energy expenditure.
Secondly, if you want to get pure technical,
you may calculate and compare calories expenditure on
the basis of what you eat. With the help of this you
can also work it out for the benefit of desired weight
loss. All you have to do is to maintain a food diary
and calculate how many calories you have consumed and
try to make ‘calories intake’ less than
the number of calories exhausted. This way you will
be able to lose some weight in quick time.
Few tips that might help you to use
pedometer properly:
- always keep pedometer close to body and place
it horizontal as well.
- Two most common places where you can keep pedometer
are above the knee or over the hip.
- It is to be noted that by climbing on stairs,
walking on slopes affects the accuracy.
- Use this for a week to establish a baseline for
the future data.
- If your pedometer is programmed to convert steps
into distance, always follow the instructions.
